M-Pesa for cloud spend: the setup, the ceilings, the workflow

M-Pesa is Kenya's dominant payment method — most Kenyan customers want to pay for services with it, and DeskBoot supports it as a first-class option. Here's what M-Pesa payments look like end-to-end: the setup, the transaction ceilings, and the workflow.

The setup: one-time

1. Sign up with your email.
2. Verify your phone (Kenyan or international; both work).
3. Add M-Pesa as a payment method — you'll get an STK push on your phone the first time you top up, exactly the way you'd expect.
4. Top up any amount in KES. DeskBoot converts to USD internally for the compute meter; your balance shows both.

That's it. STK push, confirm PIN, done in under a minute.

The ceilings you should know

M-Pesa has a per-transaction ceiling (KES 150,000 = ~$1,000). If you want to prepay more than that in one go, do multiple top-ups or use a card instead. For most customers this doesn't come up — cloud desktops are hourly-billed, so you rarely need to park more than KES 5,000–10,000 up front.

Daily M-Pesa transaction limits also apply, set by Safaricom on your line. If you hit them, top-up returns a specific "limit exceeded" error and you'll need to wait or upgrade your M-Pesa tier.

The workflow

• Auto-stop at $0 kicks in when your balance hits zero. Sessions stop; they don't terminate. Storage keeps accruing at ~$0.08/GB/mo until you top up again or terminate manually.
• Low-balance emails land at 4-hour, 1-hour, and $0 thresholds.
• Refundable balance on account close (card-funded USD only for now; M-Pesa is one-way per Safaricom's rules, but we're working on it — email us if this matters to you).

The Paystack bit

Under the hood, M-Pesa top-ups go through Paystack. This means we don't touch your M-Pesa PIN — the STK push goes to Safaricom, you confirm on your phone, Paystack tells us it went through, we credit your balance. Same flow as buying airtime, no extra risk surface.

The tradeoff

M-Pesa is great for KES top-ups, but it's not symmetric. Refunds are one-way: M-Pesa → DeskBoot is instant; DeskBoot → M-Pesa isn't a supported payout flow yet. If you want two-way flexibility (top up and later withdraw unused balance), fund your account with a card instead. If you just want to pay for cloud without leaving the Kenyan financial system, M-Pesa is the right pick.
